Air Freight

Air transportation, depending on your needs, has countless advantages, the most important of which is its high speed of delivery. Fast and reliable international transportation for sensitive goods is recognized as the quickest and most seamless method of shipping. This method is the best option for moving lightweight and high-value items. In addition, due to the rapid completion of customs procedures, any delays in cargo clearance are prevented.

Air transport is the most suitable choice for perishable goods that require fast delivery. Likewise, for transporting light and valuable items where delivery time is critical, this method is considered the best option. Using fast and reliable international transportation for sensitive goods allows businesses to deliver their products with complete confidence and in the shortest possible time.

In the following section, we will mention several important points regarding air transportation:

One of the important factors in air transport is the labeling of packages. Observing the total weight (including both cargo and passengers) is far more critical in air transport than in other methods of transportation.

Sometimes, it becomes necessary to unload part of the shipment or several packages even after loading has taken place.

The weight, dimensions, and other specifications of a shipment or package must be prepared in advance and attached to the package.

The information label attached to the shipment usually includes the following details:

  • Air waybill number

  • Destination

  • Total number of packages

  • Total weight

  • Flight transfer station

  • Handling instructions (loading/unloading)

  • Internal air waybill number (AHWB)

The shipper’s shipping instruction is almost as important as the air waybill itself! For this purpose, one may use the FIATA Shipping Instruction (FIATA SLI) form or the shipper’s own letterhead. This instruction must contain all the information required to complete the air waybill. From a legal perspective, the shipping instruction includes two key points:

  1. To the agent (forwarder): The forwarder, as the contracting party, is authorized to sign the airline’s air waybill on behalf of the shipper.

  2. Certification: It certifies that the shipment being sent conforms to the information provided.

The preparation of documents related to export, customs, etc. is the responsibility of the shipper, and these documents must be prepared and submitted to the transport company at the same time as the SLI. Unlike sea freight, in air transport these documents accompany the shipment together with the air waybill during the journey. Sending them separately in any other way would result in delays and reduce the speed of air transport. In fact, even before the arrival of the aircraft and cargo, the necessary documents are often sent electronically to the destination country, enabling customs procedures to be carried out before the cargo arrives.

In air transportation, the size and dimensions of the shipment and packages are decisive factors. In other words, if a shipment cannot physically pass through the doors of the aircraft, transporting it by air becomes impossible.

The weight of the shipment is another critical factor. If the cargo has a weight density exceeding the allowable limit, and as mentioned earlier, if the load pressure on the aircraft’s surface surpasses the permissible threshold, then this pressure and density must be distributed and spread over a wider surface using suitable equipment to prevent damage to the aircraft’s structure.

Although airlines themselves have the expertise, equipment, and facilities required to ensure security, the shipper and the forwarder must also cooperate in this regard. The labels and markings on packages should not reveal that the goods are valuable. In such cases, “code numbers” or coded markings should be used.

The airline must be informed if the shipment contains high-value goods, and it is essential to ensure the level of security measures the airline can provide. High-value cargo should be sealed. One must also be aware of the level of financial liability the airline accepts compared to the shipper’s obligations toward their customer, and, if necessary, secure appropriate insurance coverage.

Shipments should not be left unattended in warehouses or cargo areas for long periods before loading or after unloading; this time should be kept to a minimum. In addition to maintaining the appropriate temperature and cooling conditions in the aircraft’s cargo hold according to the type of goods, properly equipped ground transport vehicles should also be used to move the cargo to and from the aircraft. Some reputable companies provide such specialized vehicles for their customers.

Cargo consolidation is one of the most important services a forwarder can offer in air transport. Through this method, a forwarding company collects miscellaneous shipments from different shippers, groups and packages them into one or several air containers, and turns them into a larger consolidated unit of cargo—reducing shipping costs.

In addition to undertaking responsibility for the transport, thanks to continuous connections with various airlines and awareness of different flight schedules, forwarding companies can also provide other services such as warehouse-to-warehouse or door-to-door transportation, thus offering customers a complete chain of integrated services. Using this method reduces shipping costs for the customer; however, taking advantage of it requires great expertise, precision, and caution, since even the smallest calculation error could turn a potential profit into a definite loss.
